Genesis Chapter 1 — Creation: God’s Power, Purpose, and Plan

Today we begin at the very beginning—the opening chapter of the Bible.

Genesis chapter 1 teaches us about the Creation of the earth, but it teaches us something even greater: it reveals the character of our Heavenly Father and reminds us that we are part of His divine plan.

As we study this chapter, consider these questions:

• What does this teach me about God?
• What does it teach me about my purpose?
• How can I become more like Him?

In the Beginning

Genesis opens with one of the most recognizable verses in scripture:

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
(Genesis 1:1)

Before anything existed, God was there.

He brought order out of chaos, light out of darkness, and life where there had been emptiness.

Through His word and His power, God created the heavens, the earth, the seas, the plants, the animals, and finally mankind.

Throughout the chapter we see a beautiful pattern:

• God spoke.
• God created.
• God saw that it was good.

Nothing about Creation was accidental. Every detail reflects divine wisdom, purpose, and love. Heavenly Father carefully prepared the earth as a place where His children could come, learn, grow, exercise agency, experience joy, and ultimately return to Him.

Jesus Christ—The Creator

Genesis chapter 1 also points us to Jesus Christ.

Modern revelation teaches that Jesus Christ created the earth under the direction of Heavenly Father (see Moses 1:33 and John 1:1–3). The Savior actively participated in preparing this world for each one of us.

That truth is deeply personal.

The same Savior who organized the heavens and the earth is the Savior who can organize our lives.

He is the One who creates beauty from brokenness, peace from confusion, and hope from despair.

At the beginning of Creation, God spoke light into darkness.

Today, Jesus Christ still brings light into darkness.

When life feels overwhelming…

When we feel uncertain…

When our path seems unclear…

The Light of Christ can illuminate the way forward.

The God who created the universe also has the power to transform our hearts.

Applying Genesis 1 to Our Lives

Genesis chapter 1 offers several powerful lessons for our daily lives.

1. Remember That You Were Created with Divine Purpose

Genesis teaches that mankind was created in the image of God.

That means your life has eternal worth.

You are not an accident.

You are not forgotten.

You are a beloved son or daughter of Heavenly Father with divine potential and an eternal destiny.

2. Trust God to Bring Order into Your Life

Before Creation, the earth was “without form, and void.”

Sometimes our lives feel that way too.

We experience uncertainty, grief, disappointment, or confusion.

But just as God brought order to the earth, He can bring peace and direction into our lives as we seek Him through prayer, scripture study, and faith in Jesus Christ.

He specializes in bringing beauty out of chaos.

3. Look for the Good

After each stage of Creation, God declared that it was good.

What if we intentionally looked for the good each day?

Instead of focusing only on what is unfinished, we can recognize God’s hand in the blessings around us and notice the good He is patiently creating within us.

Growth often happens one step at a time.

Just like Creation.

Questions to Ponder

As you study Genesis chapter 1 this week, consider asking yourself:

• Where do I need the Savior’s light in my life?
• What areas of my life need greater order and peace?
• What gifts and divine potential has God placed within me?
• How is Heavenly Father helping me become more like Him?

Write your impressions in your journal.

The Holy Ghost often teaches us as we pause to reflect.

A Simple Invitation

This week, spend a few moments intentionally noticing God’s creations.

Watch a sunrise.

Look at the stars.

Walk among the trees.

Notice the beauty of the mountains, the flowers, the birds, and the people you love.

Then offer a simple prayer of gratitude and ask:

“Heavenly Father, help me see myself and others the way You see us.”

You may be surprised by the peace that follows.

Final Thoughts

Genesis chapter 1 reminds us that we belong to a God of power, purpose, order, and perfect love.

The God who created galaxies also knows your name.

He understands your struggles.

He celebrates your progress.

And He is still creating something beautiful in your life.

As we continue our journey through the Old Testament, we’ll discover that every story ultimately points us to Jesus Christ—the Creator, the Redeemer, and our Savior.

May we learn to see His hand in every chapter and trust His work in our own lives.
