Genesis Chapter 12 — Abraham’s Call: Faith to Follow God Into the Unknown

Abraham and Sarah traveling with their household toward the Promised Land.

Today we continue our journey through the book of Genesis as we study one of the most important chapters in all of scripture.

Genesis chapter 12 marks a turning point in God’s plan of redemption.

After the rebellion at Babel scattered the nations, God called one man through whom He would begin gathering His children again.

That man was Abram, who would later be known as Abraham.

The covenant God established with Abraham would eventually bless every nation, every family, and every child of God through Jesus Christ.

As we study this chapter, consider these questions:

  • What is the Lord inviting me to trust Him with today?
  • Am I willing to follow Him, even when I cannot see the whole path?
  • How can my faith become a blessing to others?

A Call to Leave the Familiar

The Lord spoke to Abram with a remarkable invitation:

“Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee.”
(Genesis 12:1)

Abram was asked to leave behind everything familiar.

His homeland.

His security.

His plans.

He was not given a detailed map or a complete explanation.

He was simply invited to trust God.

Abram responded with quiet faith.

Scripture simply says:

“So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him.”
(Genesis 12:4)

Sometimes the greatest acts of faith are not dramatic moments.

They are simple decisions to obey one step at a time.

The Covenant That Would Bless the World

The Lord made extraordinary promises to Abram.

He said:

“I will make of thee a great nation… and thou shalt be a blessing.”
(Genesis 12:2)

God also promised:

“In thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
(Genesis 12:3)

This promise is known as the Abrahamic Covenant.

It was never intended to bless Abraham’s family alone.

It was God’s plan to bless the entire world.

Through Abraham’s descendants would come prophets, scripture, priesthood blessings, sacred covenants, and ultimately Jesus Christ.

Today, as we make and keep sacred covenants, we become part of that same covenant family.

Like Abraham, we are blessed so we can bless others.

Jesus Christ—The Fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant

Genesis chapter 12 points directly to Jesus Christ.

Every promise God made to Abraham finds its ultimate fulfillment in the Savior.

Jesus Christ was born through Abraham’s lineage.

Through His Atonement, every family on earth is invited to receive forgiveness, healing, and eternal life.

Because of Jesus Christ, the blessings promised to Abraham are available to all who come unto Him in faith.

The Savior gathers God’s children from every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.

He is the fulfillment of the covenant.

And through Him, we become heirs to God’s promises.

Applying Genesis Chapter 12 to Our Lives

Genesis chapter 12 teaches timeless principles for disciples of Jesus Christ.

1. Faith Often Begins with One Step

Abram did not know every detail of the journey before he began.

He simply trusted the Lord enough to take the next step.

Sometimes we wait until we have every answer before moving forward.

God usually asks us to exercise faith first.

As we move forward in trust, He reveals the path one step at a time.

2. God’s Promises Require Patience

God promised Abraham blessings that would unfold over a lifetime—and even beyond his lifetime.

Many of God’s greatest promises come gradually.

Faith means trusting that God is working, even when we cannot yet see the outcome.

His timing is always perfect.

3. We Are Blessed to Bless Others

One of the most beautiful phrases in this chapter is:

“Thou shalt be a blessing.”

God blesses us so we can become instruments in His hands.

We bless others through:

  • Our kindness.
  • Our service.
  • Our testimony.
  • Our willingness to forgive.
  • Our faithful example.

The covenant was never meant to stop with us.

It is meant to flow through us.

4. Build Altars Along the Journey

As Abram traveled, he repeatedly built altars to worship the Lord.

These altars became places of remembrance, gratitude, and renewed commitment.

While we may not build stone altars today, we create spiritual altars whenever we pray, study the scriptures, worship in the temple, partake of the sacrament, and take time to remember God’s goodness.

Those sacred moments strengthen our faith for the journey ahead.

Questions to Ponder

As you study Genesis chapter 12 this week, prayerfully consider:

  • What is the Lord inviting me to leave behind?
  • Where is He asking me to trust Him more fully?
  • How can my faith become a blessing to my family and others?
  • What spiritual “altar” can I build to remember God’s faithfulness?

Take time to write down the impressions the Holy Ghost places upon your heart.

The Lord often guides us one faithful step at a time.

A Simple Invitation

This week, identify one act of faith the Lord is inviting you to take.

Perhaps it is offering forgiveness.

Following a spiritual prompting.

Serving someone in need.

Strengthening your scripture study.

Making or renewing a sacred covenant commitment.

Take that one step.

Then trust that the Lord will reveal the next step as you continue walking with Him.

Final Thoughts

Genesis chapter 12 marks the beginning of one of the greatest covenant stories in all of scripture.

Abraham’s journey began with a simple act of trust.

He did not know where every road would lead.

He simply knew the God who was leading him.

That same invitation is extended to each of us.

As we follow Jesus Christ with faith, keep our covenants, and trust God’s timing, He shapes our lives into a blessing for others.

The covenant He made with Abraham continues today.

Through Jesus Christ, every child of God is invited to become part of His covenant family and receive the blessings He has promised from the very beginning.
