Genesis Chapter 9 — The Covenant with Noah: God’s Promises, Remembering Covenants, and Becoming a Light to Others

Today we continue our journey through the book of Genesis as we study chapter 9.

The storm has passed.

The floodwaters have receded.

Noah and his family now stand on a renewed earth, ready to begin again.

After judgment came mercy.

After waiting came hope.

After the flood came one of the most beautiful covenant promises found anywhere in scripture.

As we study this chapter, consider these questions:

  • What does God’s covenant with Noah teach me about His love for His children?
  • How do my own covenants draw me closer to Jesus Christ?
  • How can I become a light of faith to those around me?

A God Who Keeps His Promises

Genesis chapter 9 begins with God blessing Noah and his family.

He told them:

“Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.”
(Genesis 9:1)

The Lord was not simply asking Noah’s family to survive.

He was inviting them to participate in His continuing work of Creation.

Then God established a covenant with Noah and all living creatures.

He promised that never again would a flood destroy all the earth.

As a sign of that everlasting covenant, God placed a rainbow in the clouds.

The rainbow was never intended to be worshipped.

It was intended to remind God’s children of the One who made the promise.

Every time Noah saw the rainbow, he could remember that God is faithful.

His promises never fail.

His mercy is greater than our fears.

His covenant love endures forever.

Genesis chapter 9 also records events within Noah’s family that remind us our choices continue to matter, even after seasons of great spiritual victory.

Noah’s life teaches us that while no person is perfect, God’s covenant faithfulness never changes.

Jesus Christ—The Fulfillment of Every Covenant

Genesis chapter 9 points us directly to Jesus Christ.

Throughout the scriptures, Heavenly Father makes covenants because He desires a relationship with His children.

Every covenant points us toward His Son.

The covenant with Noah reminds us that God always keeps His promises.

The rainbow is a physical reminder of a spiritual reality:

God remembers His covenants.

Today, we have reminders of God’s covenant love all around us.

We find them in the scriptures.

We feel them through the Holy Ghost.

We renew them through sacred ordinances.

We remember them in holy temples.

Most importantly, we see them in Jesus Christ.

The Savior is the greatest evidence that Heavenly Father always keeps His promises.

Because of Jesus Christ, every covenant God has made can ultimately be fulfilled.

Through His Atonement we receive mercy.

Through His grace we receive strength.

Through His Resurrection we receive eternal hope.

Every covenant leads us to Him.

Applying Genesis Chapter 9 to Our Lives

Genesis chapter 9 teaches timeless principles for every disciple of Jesus Christ.

1. God’s Promises Never Fail

The rainbow appeared after one of the greatest storms in history.

It reminded Noah that the storm was not the end of the story.

The same is true for us.

Life brings disappointment.

Loss.

Heartache.

Uncertainty.

Yet God’s promises remain unchanged.

When our circumstances change, His character does not.

He is always faithful.

2. Covenants Strengthen Our Relationship with God

Covenants are much more than promises we make.

They are sacred relationships that bind us to Jesus Christ.

As we faithfully honor our covenants, we receive spiritual strength, greater peace, and access to God’s power in our daily lives.

Our covenants remind us not only of what we have promised God, but also of everything He has promised us.

3. Our Choices Influence Future Generations

Genesis chapter 9 reminds us that our choices never affect only ourselves.

They bless—or burden—those who come after us.

Whether in our families, friendships, or communities, our daily decisions help shape the spiritual legacy we leave behind.

Like Noah, we have opportunities to become examples of faith for future generations.

4. We Are Called to Reflect God’s Faithfulness

The rainbow reflects light after the storm.

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are also called to reflect His light into the lives of others.

When we extend forgiveness…

Keep our promises…

Offer hope…

Show kindness…

And testify of Jesus Christ…

We become living reminders that God is faithful.

Questions to Ponder

As you study Genesis chapter 9 this week, prayerfully consider:

  • What promises from God bring me hope today?
  • How are my covenants strengthening my relationship with Jesus Christ?
  • What kind of spiritual legacy am I creating for those who follow me?
  • How can I reflect the Savior’s light more fully this week?

Take time to write down the impressions the Holy Ghost places upon your heart.

God often reminds us of His promises as we quietly seek Him.

A Simple Invitation

This week, the next time you see a rainbow—or even if you simply think about one—pause for a moment.

Remember that God’s faithfulness is not dependent upon your circumstances.

He keeps His promises.

Take a few minutes to record one promise God has fulfilled in your life.

Then thank Him for His goodness and ask Him to help you faithfully keep the covenants you have made with Him.

Final Thoughts

Genesis chapter 9 reminds us that our Heavenly Father is a covenant-keeping God.

After every storm comes the opportunity to trust Him again.

After every trial comes another invitation to remember His goodness.

The rainbow is not merely a symbol of hope.

It is a witness of God’s faithfulness.

Through Jesus Christ, every covenant finds its fulfillment.

Every promise finds its answer.

And every child of God is invited to receive His mercy, His grace, and His eternal love.

As we continue our journey through the Old Testament, we will see that God’s covenants continue to unfold through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, and ultimately through Jesus Christ—the Mediator of the New and Everlasting Covenant.

“For I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning.”
