Today we continue our journey through the book of Genesis as we study chapter 6.
This chapter introduces us to Noah, a prophet who lived in a time of great wickedness. Through his example, we learn about faith, obedience, courage, and trusting God even when the world around us chooses a different path.
As we study this chapter, consider these questions:
- Am I willing to follow God, even when it is difficult or unpopular?
- Where do I find safety in an increasingly uncertain world?
- How do my covenants strengthen my faith in Jesus Christ?
Noah Found Grace in the Eyes of the Lord
By Noah’s day, the earth had become filled with violence, corruption, and wickedness. Many people had turned away from God and rejected His commandments.
Yet one man chose a different path.
Genesis tells us:
“Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.”
(Genesis 6:8)
Noah was described as a just man who walked with God.
Notice that Noah first found grace. God’s love and favor came before the work of building the ark. Noah’s obedience was a faithful response to the grace God had already extended to him.
Because of the world’s wickedness, the Lord revealed His plan to Noah. He commanded him to build an ark that would preserve his family and representatives of every kind of animal through the coming Flood.
Building an ark was no small assignment.
For years, Noah labored faithfully, even though there was no visible evidence that the Flood would come. Scripture also teaches that Noah preached repentance to the people, inviting them to turn back to God.
Many rejected his message.
Still, Noah remained faithful.
Genesis simply records:
“Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.”
(Genesis 6:22)
His quiet obedience became one of the greatest examples of faith in all of scripture.
Jesus Christ—Our Ark of Safety
Genesis chapter 6 points us directly to Jesus Christ.
The ark was more than a large boat.
It became a place of refuge, protection, and hope during a time of great destruction.
In many ways, the ark is a beautiful symbol of the Savior.
Just as Noah and his family entered the ark through faith and obedience, we come unto Jesus Christ through faith, repentance, sacred covenants, and enduring discipleship.
The storms of life still come.
Temptation.
Disappointment.
Fear.
Loss.
Yet the Savior invites us to find safety in Him.
Through His Atonement, His gospel, His Church, His ordinances, and His covenant path, He provides a place of spiritual refuge that the world cannot offer.
The Flood also reminds us that God is both perfectly just and perfectly merciful.
He cannot ignore sin forever.
Yet before judgment came, He sent a prophet.
He offered warnings.
He extended opportunities to repent.
And He prepared a way for those willing to trust Him.
That pattern continues today.
Our loving Heavenly Father still calls prophets, still invites us to repent, and still points us to His Son, Jesus Christ—the only source of lasting safety and salvation.
Applying Genesis Chapter 6 to Our Lives
Genesis chapter 6 offers timeless principles that strengthen our faith today.
1. Faith Always Leads to Action
Noah did not simply believe God.
He acted on what he believed.
Real faith changes the way we live.
We demonstrate our faith by praying, serving, forgiving, keeping our covenants, studying the scriptures, and following the Savior even when the path is difficult.
Faith is more than belief.
It is trusting God enough to obey Him.
2. Righteousness May Require Standing Apart
Noah lived in a culture where righteousness was uncommon.
He chose to follow God anyway.
Today, disciples of Jesus Christ may also find themselves standing apart from the values of the world.
Our goal is not to be different for the sake of being different.
Our goal is to be faithful.
When we choose Christ over popularity, we discover a peace that the world cannot give.
3. God Always Provides a Way of Safety
The Lord did not simply warn Noah about the coming Flood.
He also provided a way to be preserved.
Our Heavenly Father does the same for us.
He gives us the scriptures.
He gives us living prophets.
He gives us prayer, the companionship of the Holy Ghost, sacred covenants, and the strength that comes through Jesus Christ.
As we stay close to Him, we find safety even when life’s storms rage around us.
Questions to Ponder
As you study Genesis chapter 6 this week, prayerfully consider:
- What is the Lord asking me to build in my own life?
- Am I willing to follow God even when others choose a different path?
- Where do I need to place greater trust in Jesus Christ?
- How are my covenants helping me find safety and peace?
Take a few moments to write down the impressions the Holy Ghost places upon your heart.
The Lord often prepares us long before we understand why.
A Simple Invitation
This week, identify one way you can strengthen your spiritual foundation.
Perhaps you will spend more time in prayer.
Study the scriptures with greater purpose.
Honor a covenant more intentionally.
Or act on a prompting you have been delaying.
Like Noah, choose to trust God’s instructions before you can see the outcome.
Every act of faithful obedience helps build an “ark” of spiritual strength for the days ahead.
Final Thoughts
Genesis chapter 6 reminds us that even when the world grows darker, God continues to call faithful men and women to walk with Him.
Noah’s obedience preserved his family and became a lasting witness that God’s promises are sure.
Today, Jesus Christ continues to invite each of us into the safety of His covenant path.
He is our refuge in every storm.
He is our source of peace in every trial.
As we continue our journey through the Old Testament, we will see that God never leaves His children without guidance. Again and again, He sends prophets, extends mercy, and prepares a way for His people to come safely home through His Son, Jesus Christ.
“For I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning.”
