Genesis Chapter 7 — The Flood: Trusting God Through the Storms of Life

Noah and his family sheltered inside the ark during the flood.

Today we continue our journey through the book of Genesis as we study chapter 7.

After years of faithful preparation, the day finally came when Noah and his family entered the ark. What followed was one of the most significant events in scripture—a worldwide flood that demonstrated both God’s justice and His mercy.

This chapter reminds us that while God does not always remove life’s storms, He always prepares a way for His children to find safety through Jesus Christ.

As we study this chapter, consider these questions:

  • How am I preparing spiritually before life’s storms arrive?
  • Where do I turn when trials come?
  • What does this chapter teach me about trusting Jesus Christ?

Entering the Ark by Faith

Genesis chapter 7 records the fulfillment of God’s warning to Noah.

After faithfully building the ark according to the Lord’s command, Noah gathered his family and the animals into the ark. He did not wait until the rain began before obeying. He trusted God’s word and acted in faith long before he saw the fulfillment of God’s promise.

Genesis tells us that Noah was six hundred years old when the Flood came upon the earth. For forty days and forty nights, rain fell, and the waters covered the earth.

The Flood was both an act of justice and an act of mercy.

Because the earth had become filled with violence and wickedness, God could not ignore sin forever.

Yet before judgment came, He provided a way of escape.

He called a prophet.

He gave warnings.

He invited people to repent.

And He prepared an ark for those willing to trust Him.

Noah’s greatest act of faith was not simply building the ark—it was trusting God day after day while nothing seemed to be happening.

For years he worked, preached, and obeyed without seeing the fulfillment of God’s promise.

Many of our greatest acts of faith look the same.

We continue praying before answers come.

We keep serving before we see results.

We forgive before relationships are healed.

We trust the Lord before we understand His purposes.

Faith often grows quietly, one obedient step at a time.

Genesis simply records:

“And Noah did according unto all that the Lord commanded him.”
(Genesis 7:5)

Jesus Christ—Our Ark of Safety

The ark is one of the greatest symbols of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament.

The ark provided safety from the destruction surrounding Noah and his family.

In the same way, Jesus Christ provides refuge from the spiritual storms we face today.

The ark did not prevent the storm.

It carried Noah safely through it.

Likewise, the Savior does not promise a life free from hardship.

He promises His presence.

His peace.

His strength.

And His power to sustain us through every trial.

Sometimes we pray for God to remove the storm.

Often, He strengthens us within it.

Just as Noah entered the ark through faith and obedience, we come unto Jesus Christ through faith, repentance, sacred covenants, and faithful discipleship.

Our covenants do not remove life’s challenges, but they bind us to the Savior, whose grace strengthens us and whose promises never fail.

Through Jesus Christ we find refuge from:

  • Sin
  • Fear
  • Discouragement
  • Spiritual confusion
  • Separation from God

He is our place of safety in every season of life.

Applying Genesis Chapter 7 to Our Lives

Genesis chapter 7 offers timeless principles that strengthen our faith today.

1. Prepare Before the Storm

Noah built the ark before the rain began.

Likewise, spiritual preparation happens before we need it.

We prepare by:

  • Praying daily.
  • Studying the scriptures.
  • Following living prophets.
  • Making and keeping sacred covenants.
  • Building our faith in Jesus Christ.

The strongest faith is usually built long before it is tested.

2. Obedience Brings Peace

From the world’s perspective, Noah’s obedience probably seemed foolish.

Yet every board he placed on the ark became another testimony of his trust in God.

Sometimes the Lord asks us to do things that require faith before we understand the outcome.

Obedience does not guarantee an easy life.

It does bring the peace of knowing we are walking with God.

3. God Remembers His Children

While the flood surrounded the ark, Noah and his family were never forgotten.

Later we read these beautiful words:

“And God remembered Noah…”
(Genesis 8:1)

This does not mean God had forgotten Noah.

It means He acted according to His covenant love and faithfulness.

Perhaps you feel forgotten.

Maybe you’ve prayed for answers that haven’t come yet.

Genesis reminds us that God never loses sight of His children.

He knows your name.

He hears every prayer.

He sees every tear.

Even when you cannot see His hand, He is faithfully working in your life.

4. Trust God’s Timing

Noah remained in the ark until the Lord directed him to leave.

He did not rush ahead of God.

Sometimes we become impatient when answers take longer than we expect.

Faith includes waiting.

God’s timing is never late.

As we trust Him, He leads us safely through every season of life.

Questions to Ponder

As you study Genesis chapter 7 this week, prayerfully consider:

  • What storms am I facing right now?
  • Am I seeking safety in Jesus Christ or trying to face life’s challenges alone?
  • What “ark” has God provided in my life?
  • How can I better prepare myself and my family spiritually?
  • Is there an area where I need to trust God’s timing more fully?

Write down the impressions the Holy Ghost places upon your heart.

The Lord often prepares us long before we understand why.

A Simple Invitation

This week, choose one way to strengthen your spiritual “ark.”

Perhaps you will:

  • Create a more consistent prayer routine.
  • Study the scriptures with greater purpose.
  • Strengthen a covenant commitment.
  • Forgive someone who has hurt you.
  • Trust Jesus Christ with a challenge you have been carrying alone.

Every act of faithful obedience strengthens your spiritual foundation and prepares you for whatever lies ahead.

Final Thoughts

Genesis chapter 7 reminds us that storms are part of mortality, but they are never greater than the Savior.

Noah trusted God before the rain began, remained faithful during the storm, and patiently waited upon the Lord.

We are invited to do the same.

Jesus Christ is our refuge.

He is our strength when we are weary.

He is our peace when life feels uncertain.

He is our sure foundation in every season of life.

As we continue our journey through the Old Testament, we will see again and again that God keeps His promises, remembers His covenant people, and faithfully provides a way of deliverance through His Son, Jesus Christ.
